Travel impacts of 2022 Fall Student Arrival for Oakland and surrounding area commuters

University students are returning to campuses in and around Oakland through August – with the bulk of move-in activity occurring this weekend and next week. Here's a look at traffic/parking restrictions and road closures expected to impact daily commutes and weekend travel.

  • Chatham University: Wednesday 8/24 & Saturday 8/27
  • Duquesne University: Tuesday 8/16 through Sunday 8/21
  • Point Park University: Sunday 8/21 through Tuesday 8/23

 

University of Pittsburgh

Congestion is expected from Saturday, August 20 through Monday, August 22 and again on Thursday, August 25 through Friday, August 26 as students return to campus residence halls and off-campus housing.

Heavy traffic congestion and high pedestrian volume is expected along the Fifth/Forbes corridor as well along Lothrop, N Bouquet, Thackeray, University Place, Ruskin, and Allequippa. There will be intermittent short traffic delays to allow for coordinated mass student crossings, as well.

The following road closure schedule will be in place for student arrival:

  • Lothrop Street impacted between Fifth & Victoria – No vehicle traffic from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. August 21 and August 25-26

  • N Bouquet Street impacted between Fifth & O'Hara – No vehicle traffic from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on August 20-22

  • Thackeray Street impacted between Fifth & O'Hara – No parking at meters from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on August 20-22

  • University Place impacted between Fifth & O'Hara – No vehicle traffic from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on August 20-22

  • Ruskin Avenue will experience heavy traffic on August 25-26, and parking meters on Ruskin will be restricted to individuals moving into Ruskin Hall

  • Allequippa Street will experience heavy traffic on August 20-26, and Pitt Police will be stationed at the corner of Allequippa & University Drive to direct traffic

  • Bagged meters will also be in place on various side streets near these closures to allow for overflow parking. All will be visibly marked.

 

Schenley Drive will also close between Forbes & Roberto Clemente Drive on Saturday, August 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. for the university's "Welcome Back Bash" event.

Additionally, heavy traffic is throughout Pitt's campus on Wednesday, August 24 for the university's "Freshman Convocation" event at the Petersen Events Center at 2:00 p.m. Pitt Police will be stationed near the venue to assist with street crossing.

During this period of August 20-26, parking for the public will be restricted to all University parking lots and garages.

And as the Pitt football season commences, the following road closures will be in place for six hours each day to allow for shuttle bus parking/loading for Acrisure Stadium Student Shuttles on September 1, September 10, September 24, October 1, October 8, November 5, and November 19 home games. Additional dates for these closures may be added, but permits are still awaiting approval.

  • University Place closed between Fifth & O'Hara
  • Schenley Drive closed between Forbes & Roberto Clemente Drive

Carnegie Mellon University

First-year students move-in on Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21, and upperclassmen begin moving in on Wednesday, August 24.

Traffic congestion and high pedestrian volumes can be expected primarily along Forbes Avenue approaching campus between S Craig St & Beeler St.

Additionally, additional pedestrian traffic can be expected on Thursday, August 25 for the university's "First-Year Convocation" event which begins at 4:30 p.m.

Note: Parking on/near CMU campus is limited, though visitor parking is available at the East Campus Garage at 4050 Forbes Avenue, as well as additional parking at 594-598 Boundary Street, 409 S Neville St, and 252 S Dithridge St. On-street metered parking is also available along Frew Street, Tech Street, Margaret Morrison, and Schenley Drive. Meter rates and times vary.

Fall term begins August 29, 2022.

Carlow University

First-year students move-in on Thursday, August 25, and upperclassmen move-in on Friday, August 26 and Saturday, August 27. Additionally, University of Pittsburgh students residing in Carlow University residence halls will be moving in on Saturday, August 20.

Minor congestion can be expected near entrance to campus at 3333 Fifth Avenue (between Chesterfield & Robinson) and behind campus along Terrace Street near parking lot entrances.

Chatham University

The majority of new students move-in on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and other returning students move-in on Saturday, August 27, 2022 between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Some early arrival students will also be moving in on August 17 & 19, and international students on August 19-20.

There are no scheduled street closures or parking restrictions. Minor congestion can be expected near residence halls located between the 5700 and 5800 block of Fifth Avenue in Shadyside, and the intersection with Maryland Avenue.

Fall term begins August 29, 2022.

Duquesne University

First-year students move-in on Tuesday, August 16, and upperclassmen move-in from Wednesday, August 17 through Sunday, August 21. Traffic and parking may be impacted along Forbes Avenue and Stevenson Street periodically during this period.

Fall term begins August 22, 2022.

Point Park University

New students move-in from Sunday, August 21 through Tuesday, August 23, and all other returning students move-in from Thursday, August 25 through Saturday, August 28.

Primary congestion areas are expected near residence halls located at:

  • 7 Wood Street, Conestoga Hall
  • 322 Blvd of the Allies & 312 Blvd of the Allies, Boulevard Apartments
  • 212 Wood Street, Lawrence Hall
  • 270 Third Avenue, Thayer Hall

Fall term begins August 29, 2022.
