I-376 Commercial Street Bridge Replacement Project - Existing Road Closure Schedule & Look at Summer 2026 Full Closure of I-376

Beginning in 2024, the ongoing I-376 Commercial Street Bridge Replacement Project has moved through construction phases with motorists, transit riders, pedestrians, and cyclists experiencing intermittent stoppages on I-376 Parkway East during bridge beam deliveries, short- and long-term lane/shoulder closures, and trail closures.

Current Phase

As of November 24, 2025, portions of the following roads and trails have been closed through February 6, 2026 (during this time, I-376 Parkway East will remain open to traffic):

  • Commercial Street
  • Forward Avenue
  • Nine Mail Run Trail

The ongoing closures are required to accommodate crews as they work to lift bridge beams and move heavy equipment/material over the roadways and trail system beneath the existing bridge structure. Closures are for everyone's safety. Posted Detour for Commercial Street traffic is as follows:

  • From Commercial Street, turn onto Whipple Street
  • Turn left onto Monongahela Avenue
  • Turn left onto S Braddock Avenue
  • Turn left onto Forbes Avenue
  • Turn left onto Beechwood Boulevard
  • Continue to Forward Avenue
  • End detour

And from Forward Avenue on the Squirrel Hill side of the Commercial Street closure, motorists are instructed to follow the posted detour in the opposite direction. (Links are to PDF file posted on the Project Website at PA.gov)

Estimated Schedule for Full Closure of I-376 Parkway East at the project site near Squirrel Hill Tunnel

Disclaimer: Unforeseen issues may arise during the project and, while PennDOT will attempt to mitigate to the extent possible, these dates are subject to change.

During the upcoming summer of 2026, I-376 Parkway East will experience a FULL closure in both directions as the existing bridge deck is replaced. Utilizing innovative Acceleratd Bridge Construction (ABC) Techniques to lateraly slide the new bridge onto the existing alignment of I-376, the closure will be as short as technologically possible.

The expected date for full closure of I-376 Parkway East is from July 10, 2026 through August 3, 2026 (sourced via PennDOT as of 12/3/25).

About the Project:

The $95 million I-376 Commercial Street Bridge Replacement project site is located between the Edgewood/Swissvale (Exit 77) interchange in Swissvale Borough and Squirrel Hill Tunnel in the City of Pittsburgh. The bridge spans over Nine Mile Run, Frick Park, and Commercial Street below; all of which are major multimodal commuter routes impacting motorists, transit riders, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.

To complete the project quickly and safely, the bridge replacement project is utilizing Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) Techniques to laterally slide the new bridge onto the existing alignment of I-376 – which allows for the new Arched Delta Frame Structure to be built just south of the existing Commercial Street Bridge on temporary foundations before ultimately being slid onto the existing alignment once demolition of the existing bridge has occurred (expected summer 2026). The Joseph B. Fay Company is the prime contractor.

The overal project also includes the installation of new overhead signage and eastbound retaining wall, lowering of the westbound I-376 off-ramp to Forest Hills/Wilkinsburg interchange (Exit 78B) to increase vertical clearance under the Parkway East, replacement of concrete median barriers, relocation of sanitary sewer lines, upgrades to guide rail, ITS Devices, Over Height Truck Detection System, and CCTV Cameras, as well as overall site restoration for both Frick Park and the Frick Park walking trail.

Motorists can expect single-lane and shoulder restrictions in each direction of I-376 on weekends and weeknights as needed through 2026. Additionally, in 2025, several overnight full closures and detours of eastbound I-376 and a full weekend closure and detour of I-376 in each direction are anticipated to occur. In 2026, motorists can expect a 25-day full closure and detour of I-376 Parkway East. The overall project is anticipated to conclude in the summer of 2027.
